GISBORNE HIGH SCHOOL.
ANNUAL MEETING OF GOVERNORS. The annual meeting cf the 'High School Board of Governors was held yesterday afternoon, in. Mr. J. W. Nolan’s office. Mr. Nolan presided, and there were also; present Messrs E. H. Mann, J. \V. Bright, and J. Coleman.
The secretary stated that he had received intimation of the re-appcint-rnent of Messrs Nolan and Coleman as representatives of the Borough and Cook County Councils, but no notification had been received regarding the Government nominee, for the position held bv Mr. C. A. deLautour. The Chairman, stated that although the appointment was not yet made, he had no doubt as to who would be the Government nominee. He had great (pleasure in proposing that Mr. C. A. -cle-Lautuor should' be re-appointed chairman for the year. Mr. deLautour had the interest of the High School and higher education very much at heart. He (Mr. Nolan) knew no man anywhere who took such a keen interest in education matters, or one who was more fitted for the position of chairman.
Mr. J. W. Bright seconded the motion, which was carried. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr. Mann, Mr. Van. Morgan was re-appointed secretary and treasurer.
The annual report, as follows, was read and a dented : “Staff.—Mr. A. R. Gatland, 8.A., Mr. F. J. Wilkes, ALA., Miss L. Wilcox, Air. AV. A. G. Penlington, Air. John Levey, Aliss Al. Higgins. Report of the Board of Governors. —The year completes the first year of the High School as an endowed secondary school. A regular staff of three male teachers anti one female has been engaged during the year. The school roll closed with, an attendance of SS hoys and girls. AA r ith a very cordial co-operation of the School Commissioners of Auckland. and the aid of the Government, a suitable site for a High School building has been acquired. A school _to accommodate 250 pupils is being built, •and should be ready for occupation in April. 1910. Three acres near the sehooi have been purchased as a site for school houses. A school house for hoys is being built, and should be available for hoarders in June. 1910. The estimated l attendance for 1910 is 130. Distinctions.—At the New Zealand University examinations _of December, 1909, one pupil gained a senior national scholarship, and one passed the junior scholarship examination with. credit; and three passed matriculation. At the Education Department’s examinations, two -gained senior free places, four qualified for junior national scholarships, and one gained a junior free place. Technical Education. —The Education Board of Hawke’s Bay has decided to take over tlie control of the school classes, and has appointed' an instructor in agriculture. Technical education in the northern portion of the Hawke’s Bay Education District would, perhaps, be better administered by a board including representatives of the Education Board, the Governors, local governing bodies, associations, and- industries. The interest of the district has to- he aroused, and the financial support of technical instruction to be better assured.”
The balance-sheet was also read and adopted, but a representative of this journal was informed that the details would not be available for publication prior to being submitted to the auditor. The Headmaster’s report stated that the school had re-opened- after the vacation with a roll .'number of 125, and admissions during the month had brought- the total up to 136. Of this number 113 were free pupils, 3 belonged to- the junior class, a.nd the remainder (20) were paying “’verything was going on all right at the' school, and there was every promise of a successful year. Some discussion took place regarding the hoarding allowances to he made to pupils living at a distance. Several applications were considered, and it was resolved to reply, to the writer stating that hoarding allowances can only he made in conformity with the regulations. A quantity of routine business was then transacted, and the meeting concluded.
