The “Daily News’ ” Ottawa correspondent reports that Canada is gratified at Britain permitting direct negotiation with Washington over the tariff. Mr. Emery, of the Board of Trade, and l Mr. Pepper, of the Bureau of Trade, are proceeding to Ottawa.
OLD AGE PENSIONS FOR FRANCE

The French Government has adopted the old age pension scheme costing £5,500,000.
DEMONSTRATIONS IN BERLIN
BERLIN, Feb. 2S
While the Kaiser was visiting Berlin yesterday 100,000 Radical demonstrators marched to the walls of the castle Shouting “.Hurrah for franchise reform.” The gates were suddenly opened. and mounted policemen dispersed the gathering. The crowd then made a demonstration outside the Crown Prince’s palace.
A DISASTROUS AVALANCHE
NEW YORK, Feb. 28
Twenty-five - families were buried by an avalanche half a mile long, at Wallace,' Idaho. Twenty-five persons have been rescued. It was believed that one hundred persons are dead under the snow.
