TE KARAKA SCHOOL PICNIC.
AN ENJOYABLE OUTING
The annual school picnic was held at Te Karaka racecourse on Thursday in hiilliant weather. The ready response of parents and friends of the school to the subscription list as well as generous contributions of provisions* went far to ensure the success of the gathering and when to this was added the splendid weather and the enthusiasm of the crowd of parents and children who gathered together at the picturesque racecourse a most enjoyable day was the result. The School Committee (Rev. W. H. Roberts (Chairman), W. Powell (sec.), A. M. Lewis, J. W. Brown, Pitcher and T. Crimmin) had the arrangements in hand and worked hard to make things successful. In this they were ably assisted I)3’. the headmaster, teachers ana a number of ladies. Mr W. Morris, a member of the Comnritte, was unavoidably absent through family bereavement. A full programme of sports had been arranged with the headmaster (Mr P. Sefton) as handicapper, and this was kept going with intervals during the whole day. A buneating competition provoked much amusement. Twenty-one boy s were competitors’ in this event and their frantic efforts to obtain a mouthful of the elusive bun thickly smeared with treacle afforded much entertainment .0 the onlooker*.
At three o’clock parents, friends and children gathered about the grandstand for the presentation of the school prizes. The Chairman, .Messrs J. AV. Brown and A. M. Lewis, made short congratulatory speeches. The Rev. AV. H. Roberts then presented the prizes. He alluded to the fact that the establishment of the PuTia school during the past year had somewhat reduced the roll and regretted it had not been possible to arrange a combined picnic of the two schools. He urged the parents to second the efforts of the master and staff to promote the efficiency of the school by sending the children regularly, which was essential to gow results and regretted that his connection with it would shortly be severed by his removal. The prizes in the. different standards on examination results were then distributed, also attendance and special prizes as follows:
