A Treasure in the Laundry

A correspondent in an English magazine describes a-new ’Meating machine for ironing frills:— One of the latest demands of fickle fashion is for fine pleating of frills and flounces sent to the laundry or cleaner, so that the wearing apparel may be returned home with an appearance practically identical to that it possessed when new. Hitherto content has prevailed with goffering, which was comparatively simple; but to achieve d pleating effect without removing the flounces or frills was impracticable. As is known in goffering, the fabric has a corrugated appearance, the channels being of U shape,' due to the type of appliance used.' With the new machine, however, a perfect pleated frill is obtained exactly the same as when new. ‘ The machine is small and compact, and capable of taking a pleat up to three inches wide. By its aid the embellishment of a blouse can be repeated in a few seconds, by the means of a patented device, the frill is cleared directly the operation is completed. Any part of a frill, no matter how difficult, can be inserted. The machine, is simple in design and operation, so that it is not'liable to get out of ordereasily. Heating is carried out with gas, and the cost of running does not exceed thrce-halfpenc© for ia day of ten hours. Its initial cost is trivial. With, this appliance the artifices of the laundress are appreciably augumented, and the appearance of the garment distinctly improved.
