VESSELS IN PORT. 'Waikonini, scow. Regulus, s.s.' The Huddart, Parker Co.’s Victoria arrived from South early on Saturday morning and left at noon for Tokomaru Bay, Auckland and Sydney. Messrs Richardson and Co.’s Ruru arrived from Napier on Saturday morning with four Polled Angus cattle, timber and posts. She returned in the evening with grass-seed and maize. The Westport Coal Co.’s Regulus, after being lightered in the bay, came up to the wharf on (Saturday morning... She returns to Westport this evening. The New Zealand Shipping Co.’s Wakanui left about midnight on Saturday for Napier, taking 1000 bales of wool. She goes alongside the wharf at Napier. The schooner Awanui sailed for North on Saturday morning. „ The ketch Coronation sailed for Auckland yesterday, and the scow Waikonini sails north to-day.
The Union. S.S. Co.’s Monowai left Auckland on her return to Gisborne at G p.m. on Saturday. She passed the Cape at 12.30 p.m. yesterday and arrived, via Tokomaru Bay, at 6.30 pan.. leaving at 9.30 p.m. for Wellington. There she tranships Dunedin passengers to the Ulimaroa. The Union S.S. Co.’s Squall is exnected to leave Auckland to-day for Tologa Bay and Gisborne. The Union S.S. Co.’s Tara,wera,_instead of leaving Dunedin on Friday, was detained for annual survey and •overhaul. She left last evening and loaves Lyttelton to-day and Wellington to-morrow, and is erfneoted to reach hero sometime on Wednesday evening. In the meantime the launch has been fixed for 7 p.m. Recently there came into- operation a section of the Mercantile Shipping Act, which makes it obligatory on foreign ships as well as British ships to have a lead-line marked upon them. The. object of the section is to get rid of the anomalous conditions formerly obtaining, whereby a British ship was subjected to penalties if her load-line was submerged, while the foreign ship was at liberty to trade to British ports loaded irrespective of such conditions.
