In a debate in the. Reichstag the Government repudiated the American official report, alleging immorality and malpractices in. the steerage department of immigrant steamers. It was claimed that the charges; did not appty to the German lines.
SUBSIDIES TO MAIL STEAMERS
NEW YORK, March 4. The United States Senate. Committee of Commerce favors G-allinger’s Bill, authorising an increase of subsidies to mail steamers to South America, Philippines, Japan, China, and Australia to 1.6 s per mile for first and second-class steamers, and 8s for third-class. At Lady Dudley’s request, the- Coun. oil of Queen Victoria Jubilee Institute of Nurses has arranged for Miss Hughes, general superintendent, to visit Australia to organise an Order of Nurses.
