MINE OWNERS NOT PREPARED FOR SETTLEMENT.

It is stated that the mine owners have forwarded a letter to Judge Scholes, definitely stating that they are not prepared to agree to a settlement on the lines suggested by Mr. Charlton, and that as far as they are concerned the negotiations are at an end. Giving evidence concering ern mines before the Wages Board, tlie manager of the Metropolitan Coal Company submitted a statement showing the. cost to the company to be ---/,000 annually for miners’ claims granted, including an outlay of from £15,000 to £20,000 on a railway through tlie mines to convey employees to their work. Me added that tlie estimates given were all moderate, for he was confident- tihe men would screw the last drop of blood possible out of them.
