After the Court resumed to-day the parties in the Patterson case entered into negotiations with ;a view to settlement', and it is possible arrangements will he made for the- payment of a substantial dividend to -the creditors. The two local papers vigorously reply to the statement of the Minister of Railways at Redding last night that Wanganui wanted special treatment (against the'r est of New Zealand in the matter of long distance railway freight rates. The/“Chronicle’’ says: “'Wanganui nevei- looked for any coddling from the Government, and if it did would not expect to get it 'from essentially a Sbutli Island Ministry.” The “Herald”!points out that long distance rates affect Tiniaru, Napier, and other towns besides Wanganui, many of which raised strong protests and the matter/ really is a Dominion one. it suggests that the seemingly former Labor/ member’s (Mr Millar) regard for tree interests of merchants and manufacturers in the four centres leads him to favor an inequitable and antinational railway policy. \ CONCEALMENT OF BIRTH. j HAMILTON, March 9.
