ORDERS FOR. MARCH
Capt. C. Hellier Evans has issued the following orders for the East Coast Mounted Rifles, for the month of March: Easter Parades.—The Sqpadron will parade, by troops, on Friday, 25th March, 1910, lor exercise under service conditions, as follows:—Gisborne Troop: At Ma karaka, at 9 a.in.. To Karaka Troop: Ait Lieut. Poynter’s residence, at 9 a.m. Makauri Troop: At Wacrenga-a-hika, at 9 a.m. Syllabus of Exercise. —Te Karaka Troop, under Lieut. Poynter, will proceed as may be ordered and! forum a line of Cossack posts to observe and delay advance of remaining troops from direction of Gisborne. The Makauri Troop will attack, being supported by Gisborne Troop. Detail orders will be issued to troop leaders. On completion of the manoeuvre, the Squadron will bivouac in the vicinity of Mr R. Scott’s (The Willows), and the following day will be further instructed in squadron drill, field firing, etc., till evening, when troops will march to their respective headquarters. Orders of Dross.—Marching order, service Dress, with full field kit, as follows : —Complete service uniform, arms and accoutrements, overcoat (rolled and strapped in front of saddle), waterproof sheet, with one good blanket (strapped behind saddle). Members to whom waterproof sheets have not been issued are notified that these cannot be supplied by the Defence Department just how, and members will noed to supply themselves with a substitute. Saddlery complete, headrope and horse rug (if desired, to he folded under saddle cloth). Haversacks to contain sufficient rations for tea on Friday night and lunch the following day. Nosebags and feed will be supplied at bivouac. Breakfast and tea on Saturday will be supplier! by squadron a.t bivouac. Non-com. officers and leaders of “fours” will arrange that cleaning gear is taken by onc member of their “four.” Towel, soap, and small necessaries should he carried by all ranks (rolled in waterproof sheet), but as little as possible should be taken, as everything has to be carried on the horse. Attendance at this parade is compulsory, and absentees will be fined unless satisfactory reasons for absence are given.
Shooting.—T)n Easter Monday, 28th March, the following competitions will he fired on the Squadron’s range, at Makauri, commencing at 9.30 a.m: Mafeking Clip.—3ooyds.. 500yds., and 700yds., 7 shots (1 sightor not to count). Bisley targets. Highest scorer holds Cup till next competition. Ex-Lieut. Hutchinson’s Cup.—lst competition. 200yds., 500yds.. and GOO vds., 7 shots (1 sightor not to count). Bisley targets. The 2nd competition to be held at a later date, and highest aggregate scorer holds Cup till next competition. Uniform. —Service dress, without belts. Scores in both of above competitions count for Champion Belt. . Mr James MoCrcdie, of Pulia, has presented a handsome Silver Clip for competition between troons. The first match will be fired at Rangatira range, To Karaka, on Saturday, 19th inst.. between teams of 7 men from Te Karaka and .Hakauri troops. Uniform: Service Dross, without belts.
Mounted Cadet Squadron.—lt is the intention of the O.C. to form a Mounted Rifle Cadet Squadron (similar to those at present attached to the Ist Regiment Wellington M.R. and 3rd Regiment Auckland M.R.), to be attached to this Squadron and under the control of the O.C. Applications will be received by the officers and Sgt.jVfajor. and should a sufficient number (52) of suitable lads apply for enrolment, the necessary authority will bo applied for to the Defence Department. Candidates for enrolment must be able to comply with the following conditions:—(l) Age: Over 14 ami under 18 years of age, and not attending a primary school. (Vide See. 35 (b) Defence Act. 1909.) (2) Horses and Equipment: Must have a suitable horse, saddle and bridle. (3) Must have a certificate of consent to enrolment from parent or guardian. (4) Must be .able to attend the necessary drills. Forms of application can be obtained from any of the officers and Sergeant-Major. Annual Training.—lt is the intention of the Officer Commanding the Regiment (Lieut.-Colonel A. Hamilton Russell) tlxat the Regiment shall go into camp for the annual training, in the vicinity of Napier, from the 20th to 27th May, 1910. Application has been made for a transport for -this Squadron from Gisborne to Napier, which will leave on 19th and return on 29th May. It is necessary that every member should attend, in order to be classed as “efficient” and earn ■capitation for this current year. Allowances -in accordance with defence regulations will be made. New Members.—A number of members having applied for their discharges, and some being written off as unfit, there are vacancies in our ranks for 25 good men. Applications for enrolment (on the proper forms) should be sent in without delay. New Service Uniform. —As soon as the new .pattern is approved, it is intended to re-uniform the whole squadron.
