CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

THE FINAL MEETING

The final mooting of the. present Cook Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar), Messrs J. It. Kirk, J. Maynard, G. Smith, Hon. Captain Tucker, and Dr. J. Clive Collins. The Inspector-General forwarded a formal statement of the proportionate representation on the new Board. Mr. R.. D. B. ltobinson tendered his resignation as secretary, on account of the increased duties in the now amalgamation. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded 1 by the Hon. Capt. Tucker, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Robinson for his services to the Board. The motion was supported by ill* Smith, each speaker expressing himself in terms eulogistic of the capabilities of the secretary.

The Visiting Committee reported as follows:—“The Visiting Committee for the month have to report that tho Old People’s Home has been visited on sev- ! oral occasions, and everything found satisfactory. They would, however, recommend that fly-proof doors and windows to dining-room be obtained, ,and that one dozen loads of gravel be obtained for the yard and that tho same be tarred. That the bath on the. .men’s side he painted, and that the gas burner in the manager’s bedroom be changed, also the walls in the manager’s sitting-room should be papered. There are fifteen inmates in the institution at the present time, Messrs D. Mellis' and John Muncaster being admitted and John Hoaphv being readmitted during the month. Applicants for aid have been few. Two were grant, ed fare® to the coast, and another is applying to-night for admission.” The report was adopted, and it was decided to hold over the question of the’ suggested improvements for tho consideration of the new Board. The Mayor said that as it was the. last meeting of the Board, lie would like to thank the members for their careful attention to the work of the Board. When all the debts had been paid and the subsidy to the hospital, there would be a cash balance in band of a little over £3OO. The cost of working the Board for the last few years was as follows: 1907-8, £1550; 190 S-9, £1275; 1909-10. £1550. These facts spoke volumes for the administration of the Board, and he was sure that the ratepayers might well be satisfied at the manner in which the members had conducted the affairs of the Board. As well as granting relief, the Board had also paid passage money for several indigent people even ns far as to Australia. In conclusion, ho expressed the hope that some of those who had been members of the Board would be elected to the new Board. Especially was this so in regard to those members of the Borough Council who were seeking elec, tion.

Mr. Kirk recommended candidates to make themselves fully acquainted with the scope of the new Act. Ho referred to the inclusion of the provision in the Act for medical attention for country settlers, and ho proceeded to deal exhaustively with the details of the Act. He thought the Legislature was to be. complimented upon bringing in a 1 which was calculated to bring hospital and Charitable Aid Board work more into touch with the masses. He wished to endorse the remarks of the Chairman regarding the conduct of the affairs of the Board.

A number of accounts wore passed for payment, and Air Harris and the Hon Capt. Tucker were appointed the visiting committee for the next month.
