MEMBERS ELECTED UNOPPOSED

[Pep. Pkess Association.] WAIROA, March 10. The following have been returned un opposed for the Hawke’s Bay Hospital and Charitable Aid Board : For caunty, Cr. A. Sinclair; for borough. Cr. F. B. Bax. ASHBURTON. March 10. Owing to no more than the requisite number of nominations being received for the first election of the Charitable Aid and Hospital Board for Ashburton County an election will not be necessary. The new Board will be constituted as follows:—-Ashburton County. John Lambie, Hugo Friedlander. W. J. Dickie. C. J. Harper, Joint Cairns, and Charles Reid. Ashburton Borough: Henry Davis. Combined town districts of Hampstead and Tinwald: G. W. Andrews SPRINGING A SURPRISE. DUNEDIN, March 10. In regard to the nominations for the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, the Bruce County Council, following the lead of the Glut ha Council, decided at its last meeting not- to hold an election, but to recommend the chairman for ap' pointment in representation of the district on the Board. Some excitementwas caused at- Milton to-day, when Mr. Alex. Stevenson, of Barnego, Balclutha handed the clerk of the Council a nomination paper and covering fee of £3 as a candidate for office of representative of the combined districts of Bruce County. Kaitangata Borough, and Milton Borough. Mr. Stevenson, armed with legal advice, took the step of being duly nominated, and he is the only candidate so nominated, and intends if lie is not accented as representative of the district to issue a writ of mandamus in the Supreme Court to compel the Council to acknowledge his election. The clerk of the Council, in face of the resolution passed at- last- meeting, refused to accept the nomination and accompanying deposit, but- acting on the County solicitor’s advice gave Mr. Stevenson an acknowledgment that the nomination paper and fee had been tendered. AN UNFORTUNATE OMISSION. In connection with the nomination of ladies for the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, it lias been discovered that Mrs. Blair’s name is not- on the municipal roll, and that therefore she is ineligible for election. Under these circumstances Mrs. Gibson Turton has withdrawn licr nomination.
