MATAWHERO STOCK SALES

The weekly stock sales took place at Matawhero yesterday, before a fairly large attendance. There was a larger varding of cattle than usual, hut the sheep yarding did not come up to last week’s, and a great number entered were old sheep and culls, which brought boiling down prices. The sale dragged considerably, and a great many pens were passed in, but a good number were afterwards disposed of. SHEEP. There were about 18,000 yarded, hut only a small number of.fat sheep. Prices for owes were lower than last week, but good quality sheep found buyers readily. As the prices indicate, a great number*ol sheen wore old and of poor quality. Fat sheep sold: 32 ewes Ss 9d, and 20 at 8s 7d. From the start the sale of store sheep dragged, and difficulty was found in selling a lot of inferior quality sorts'. A number of rams offered nipt with good demand. CATTLE. There was a big yarding of about 480 head of cattle, but the cattle market was extremely slow, store cattle especially being hard to sell and a great number were passed in. Sales were: 1 fat cow £3 15s, 5 fat heifers £3 10s, 7 beef cows £3 10s, and 7 at £4, 14 IS-months-old steers £1 15s. 2 cows and calves £1 16s, 1 cow and 2 calves 16s per head, 30 cows £3, 1 cow and calf 20s, 8 yearling steers 365, 3 cows £2 12s 6d, 1 cow and calf £2, 1 springing c-ow £3 13s 6d, 1 springing heifer £4 ss. PIGS. There were about 27 yarded, and these were not so keenly sought after as usual. The sales were: 7 at 16s Gd, 7 at Gs 6d, 6 at 12s, and 5 at ss. FROZEN MEAT. rpnii I*iiess Association. | March 10. The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company, —oiidon, to-dav cabled the following report on the frozen meat market: “Tike market continues firm. To day’s prices are: Mutton, Canterbury. 4L Napier, Wellington, and North Island, 3d; lamb, first quality, 5-gd ; beef, hindquarters Sjjtl, forequarters 3 id.” LONDON WOOL SALES. WELLINGTON, March 10. A supplementary cablegram from the Hi.rrj, Commissioner in connection witn the opening of the London wool sales states that the quantity of New Zealand woo] catalogued lor the- series amounts to 76,800 bales.
