FOR THE CHILDREN.
AMBITIOUS SOPHY. We have already printed two 1 poems by Mrs. Elizabeth Turner, vv , simple verses pleased our grandinot when they were youug. The folloc. is also from her jien Miss Sophy, ono fine sunny day, Left her woi'k and ran away; When soon she reached the garden j: "Which finding lock’d, she would wait, But tried to climb and scramble o’c A gate as high as any door. But little girls should never cl:.. *, And Sophy won’t another time ; For when, upon the highest rail, Her frock was caught upon a nail, She lost her hold, and, sad to tell, Was hurt and bruised—for down she fell. THIS MORNING. Waking, before I turned my head Windowwards, “Blue sky,” I said, “The rain gone by.” For on the old barn’s mossy slates A bird was whistling to his mates Right merrily. But when I drew my curtain back The world was drenching, and a black North-easter blew; The sky’s face had no hint of joy— But what of that, brave starling hoy? ’Twas nought to you ! Full cheerfully you clapped your wings, As if to applaud the scheme of things. Whate’er might chance; And made. your beak a castanet, As though you bade the world forget Its woes and dance. Oh, yon "re the one for rainy days, To sing us down the wintry ways When wo are sad. So good luck to your feather-pate, Your chimney-corner, and your mate, Starling, my lad! —HabLerton Lulham. “St. James’s Budget.”
