AN ESGAPED PRISONER.
RECAPTURED AT AWAHURI
[Per Press Association. 1 PALMERSTON N., March 14. The man, Joseph Powelka, who had been in Palmerston gaol awaiting trial on charges of housebreaking and removing furniture, escaped from, tlie exercise yard on Saturday by using an upturned bucket to scale the wall while the> warder’s back was turned. Powelka found a bicycle adjacent to the yard, and rode off. A man answering Ins description aroused a storekeeper at Bunnvthorpe at midnight cn Saturday, and purchased 1 some food, but lie lias not since been heard of. The police arc securing the country for lum. Powelka, the escaped prisoner, was captured at Awaimri this afternoon. Powelka made no attempt at resistance when caught, and was handcuffed and brought into Palmerston. He had slept out on the road on Sunday night. |appeared before the Magistrate this afternoon, and was remanded to Wellington.
