NORTH ISLAND BRASS BANDS.
- ANNUAL CONTEST AT WANGANUI. [Peu Press Association.! WANGANUI. March 14. The North Island Brass Band Association’s fourteenth annual contest was commenced' this evening, when ime E Flat soprano cornet and the B Elat baritone solos were played. The soprano was won by John Trussell (Wanganui Garrison), Wilkinson (Gisborne City) second. There were ten competitors. The baritone competition was won by George Jenson (Wanganui Garrison),' J. Cosgrove (Gisborne City) second, and Thomas Cole (Nelson Garrison) third. There were seven competitors. The weather was very wet. The B Flat and E Flat bass solos will be taken in the morning, a garden party in the afternoon, and the B Flat cornet solos m the evening. SUccESS OF GISBORNE COMPETITORS. [Special to “Times.”] WANGa.noI, March 14. The band contest commenced tonight. In the soprano cornets J. Trussell (Wanganui Garrison), 108 points, was first, F. C. Wilkinson (Gisborne), 107, second, and Stephenson (Blenheim Garrison), 102, third. In the baritone contest C. Jensen (Wanganui), 116, was first, J. Cosgrove (Gisborne), 113, second, and T. Cole (Nelson), 108, third. There were ten competitors iu the sopranos and seven in the baritones. The Gisborne boys are delighted with having won two seconds. Wilkinson would have been an easy winner but for nervousness. The hands will bo entertained at a garden party on the racecourse to-moi'-row The first test piece will be played on Wednesday night, thirteen bands competing.
