A NEW MAIL ROUTE.

TO CROSS' THE ANDES. United Press Association —Copyright MELBOURNE, March 15. The Postal Department is considering the Colonial Office despatch dealing with- the question of opening the Trans-Andine railway, suggesting a shorter mail route between Australia and England. It is estimated tliat mails from England could be landed in Sydney in 27 days. AN AUCKLAND OPINION. [Pkr Press Association.l AUCKLAND, March 15. In reference to the London cable concerning the suggested mail route via the Trans-Andine railway, inquiries made amongst Auckland commercial people elicited the information that any. route which will shorten communication with London will naturally be welcomed, but, at the same time, it is felt that the route via South America will not compare with those via San Francisco ’or Vancouver. At Valnnraiso there is no harbor, and ships have to stand out in the open roadstead. There are uo trade prospects to be . considered, as wheat and minerals are the main ex- * ports from the Chilian port. From. f Wellington to Monte Video over the present trade route the distance is 5975 miles, and, with an added train journey of some 1500 miles across South America, it is net considered that the saving will be very great.
