HEAVY GALE IN NELSON.
CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE
[Per Press Association.] NELSON, March 15. A heavy not-h-westerly gale, with high running tides caused the highest sea, on the foreshore, for many years. The iPort road, the lower part of the Wood, andi part of Washington Valley are under water. It, is .believed that considerable damage, has been done, at the Port, and boats are out rescuing ■poultry and removing goods in the Wood. The water washed over 'Halifax street, near the centre of the city right to the foot of the new post-office stairs. Heavy rainß has fallen. It is now clearing though the gale is still raging. The water was 2ft over the wharf at Motueka. The heavy northerly gale and torrential rain at Takaka continued to-day. The wharf is 3 inches under water. The tide is the highest on record. The ketch Venture broke from her moorings and. drifted, on to, a mudbank, whores he was safely anchored. Flooded rivers are expected at high tide tonight. At Nelson the flood has subsided considerably. The damage done is principally confined to the Port road, Stoke, and northern parts of the Wood', including a. washout of three-quarters of a mile of railway at Stoke. The rowing club’s boat landing and l Lukin’s wharf is under water. There was a depth of 18 inches of water in houses in Trafalgar street North and Wainui street. The water is still lying in gardens, without an outlet.
