In the Canadian House of Commons Sir F. Borden, Minister for Defence, said that General French's visit- was only semi-official, and had no special reference to mobilisation. Sir Janies Reid, physician-in-ordinary to tbe King, believes that King Edward caught a slight cold during his journey from London to Biarritz, but- states that there is no fever. His Majesty, as a precaution, remained indoors yesterday. THE MAINE TO BE RAISED. WASHINGTON, March 17. The House of Representatives Committee on Naval Affairs at Washington has approved of an appropriation of half a million dollars (£100,000) to raise the wreck of the battleship Mai"e at Havana. The wreck is reported to be a menace to navigation. [The U.S. battleship Maine was sunk by an explosion on the night of February loth, 1898, and 2GO men lost their lives. The occurrence was the direct cause of the Spanish-Anierican war, a s the Americans considered that she was treacherously blown up by a mine. Havana was then a Spanish port.j CANADIAN WATER POWER. OTTAWA, March 16. The Canadian House of-Commons, after 25 hour’s sitting, positively refused to pass the- St. Lawrence Power Transmission Company’s Bill, on theground that it is calculated to exploit the water power of the river for the benefit of United States speculators.
