THE WANGANUI CONTEST. GISBORNE THIRD IN TEST SELECTION. [Per Press Association. | WANGANUI, March 16. The first tests took place this evening. The weather was fine, and a very large number of people gathered in the beautiful grounds of the Jockey Club. B grade bands, of which there were, ten, played first, their test piece being “Belle of Brittannia.” The Nelson band topped the list with 128 points, Wanganui City being next with 124, and Gisborne City third with 119. The others were placed as follows: — Cambridge 118, Wellington Tramways 117, Waitura 115, Blenheim 108, Feikling 105, Manana 102, Opunako 90. The judge said) that Nelson put up an excellent performance. The first grade contest between Wan. ganui Garrison and Petono proved a very easy thing for the champions, who, in the language of the judge, put up a very fine performance, while Petone came in for rather unfavorable criticism. Wanganui scored 120 points and Petone 76. The test piece was “Liszt. ’ GISBORNE WINS SIDE DRUM' COMPETITION.

iSHE VEERS' UNION ORGANISER SUPPOSED TO BE DROWNED.
(Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, March 16. This morning a- complete set of men’s clothes was found on the beach at Happy Valley, four miles from the city, giving the appearance that someone had gone into the sea to bathe, and lost bis life. Among the documents found in a leather bag lying near were papers relating to the Shearers’ Union, and bearing the name “P. F. Darcy.” The police searched this afternoon, but found no trace.of the body. [Mr P. F. Darcy was the organiser of the Shearers’ Union for New Zealand. He paid a visit to Gisborne a few months ago.]
