THE TOKOMARU MATCHES

The team of cricketers 'which left Gisborne yesterday morning by the s.s. Hauroto, arrived at Tokomaru Bay at 4.20 yesterday afternoon. They had a pleasant run up the Coast although there was a strong wind blowing and a fair sea running. The team was landed in -a surf boat towed by the launch and reached the Tokomaru wharf at 5 p.m. Here they were met and welcomed by Messrs Oates, Reed and Turnbull, and were driven to the Tokomaru hotel, where they are being put up. A series of entertainments is being arranged for the visitors, and there is every prospect that their sojourn at Tokomaru will be a pleasant one. The weather was fine last night, with every appearance of holding up. The ■match .with Tokomaru commences today at 10 a.m. Wilder will be unable to* play for the home team. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. The following combined eleven has been chosen by the selector (Mr W. Gibson) to play against the Wanderers team at Taruheru on Saturday afternoon: —Pine, Barker, Lasker, Davies, Dillon. Hallamore, Olsen, Miller. Hodge, Scroggie, Hannigan. The team to play against a team of IS juniors at Victoria Domain will be published to-morrow morning.

MATCH AGAINST MANAWATU

Manawatu, commenced this afternoon. There was a fair attendance. The weather was overcast, but rain kept off. The ground was in good order, and the wicket was, if anytliing, slightly heavy but was not particularly difficult. Armstrong and Gorry were not playing. Bardsley won the toss, and sent Manawatu to the wieikets. 'Ongley and Mitchell opened for the local team, to the bowling of Whitty and Emery. Mitchell stepped two balls, and at the third was clean bowled' by a tricky one from Whitty. o—l—o.0 —I—o. Trevena followed. Ongley hit Emery for three, which just failed to reach the boundary. Trevena scored a- single with a neat one to leg, but the over found him facing Whitty, whose third ball found his middle stump. 42 —1. Goldspring followed. In the next over Onglev hit Emery for three, but soon after he knocked one of Whitty’s deliveries into the slips, and Emery brought off a neat onehanded catch. McLean, the. local cap_ tain, replaced Ongley, and scored off Whitty. Whitty’s average up to this time had been three- overs, three maidens, three wickets. Goldspring was clean bowled by Emery. 13—4—2. The next man, Mason, scored a lucky three off Emery, but he fell a victim to Whitty, being caught smartly in the slips by Emery. 16—5 —3. o‘Connor followed, and in Whitty’s next over placed one into Bardsley’s hands at third. 20 —3—2. Cobbe was next man. Emery clean bowled McLean, but the umpire called “No ball,” and the captain got a life. The ball was the seventh of the over. McLean was now playing with more confidence, and soon after placed a- neat one to leg. but the next over of Wbittv’s proved too much for him, and, after several escapes, the ball found his off stump. 33—7—7. Holland followed, and a brief stand took place. Fifty went up for an hour’s play Tilings showed signs of livening up,' and Holland lifted Emery for another four. Cobbe followed this up by two fours. The brief partnership was broken by Holland’s wicket falling to a swift one from Emery. 648 —13. Bartlett followed, and made a single. Cobbe fell l.b.w. to Emery. He had made the highest score for his side, 32, bv clever hitting, and his hits included five fours. 799 —32. Wells walked to the wickets, placed one-into TV kitty’s 1 rands, and walked back again. 79—10 —O. Eyre scored a brace, but was clean bowled next ball. 87—11 2. Greer was the last man, and placed a short pitched ball of Emery’s into Bardslcy’s hands, the innings closing for 87, after an hour and a half’s play. The Australians opened to the bowling of Ongley and Bartlett. Facey and Dodds were the batsmen. Facey caused a sensation by hitting ’Ongley put of the ground twice in rapid succession in the same. spot. Twenty and thirty went up on the board in quick time. Greer relieved Ongley, and with his fourth ball clean bowled Facey. 36 —1 Greer’s first delivery, but there was no one handy. Shortly afterwards lie repeated the performance with.
