THE WANGANUI CONTEST
[Pec Press Association.! WANGANUI, March 17. The band contest was'continued today. The weather was gloriously fine and the quick step competition took place in the presence of a record crowd. The sate takings amounted to £350. Twelve bands competed. Wanganui Garrison carried off the first prize with a total of 2S5| points. Of these 130 were for music. Blenheim was second with 283 points, 122 being for music. Petone came third with 265 points, 126 being for music. The others finished as follows: Nelson 261 i, Wanganui Citv 253, Manaia 2474. Gisborne 2474, Cambridge 243. Wellington Tramway--2331, Waitara ' 2324, Feilding 223 V Opunaki 217. During the afternoon Mr James Crichton was presented with a gold medal to commemorate the fact that he was the conductor of the finest performance bv any massed band in New Zealand, viz., that at the garden party on Tuesday. Mr Maurice Cohen was presented with a handsome oil painting on the occasion of resigning the presidency of the North Island Brass Band Association, after holding the office for 12 years. This evening the quartette competition took place. There were only four competitors and the results were: Nelson. 132, 1; Wanganui No. 1, 129. 2; Wanganui No. 2. 121. 3: Gisborne, 107, 4. The judge said that the trinnmg quartette was the best he has ever heard. ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the North Island Brass Bank Association was held this evening, fifty delegates being present. Mr Louis Cohen was elected president, and Messrs Holben and Charker were re-elected as secretary and treasurer respectively. Other officers elected were: Timekeeper, Mr J. Huntr; executive, Messrs J. T. Muir, J. Trussel (Wanganui). Pederson (Marten). Haybittle (Feilding), McConnell (Waitara). Patekett and Jupp (Wellington), Jones, Pringle and Maunsey (Palmerston Y.j. It was decided to make no change in the grading system. ) The next- contest is to be he id at- Pal merston North, and Gisborne s claims for the 1912 contest are to be favorably considered. [Special to “Times.”] WANGANUI, March If. The quickstep competition was held on the racecourse in perfect weather to-dav. There was a great attendance, about 10,060. All the bands played under the same grade. Wanganui winning with 2S o.i points. - Although Gisborne Band was sixth it has gained points on music on Wanganui City for second place in the aggregate. The final test will be played to-morrow night. Conductor Lawrence is confident- that Gisborne will put up a good fight. Our band has been requested to play a programme at the Australian r. Wanganui cricket match on Saturday.
