During the late Charles .Fee-liter’s management of the Lyceum, the .actor •was frequently visited in his dressing-; room by the King '(then Prince of Wales), and on several occasions instructed his Royal visitor in the art of make-up. One day the King suddenly appeared 'before Queen Victoria in the guise of a tramp. Her Majesty, terrified and imagining that by some means or other a despicable character had gained access to the Palace, flew to the •bell, but before the attendants reached tlm apartment the Prince had thrown off his disguise. Naturally enough, he was very proud l of the fact that the Queen had failed to recognise (him : it is said, however, that- Her Majesty did not appreciate the joke to the extent that the perpetrator did.
