CIVIL SERVICE SPORTS ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL DINNER. The first annual dinner of the Civil Service Sports Association was held in the Oddfellows'" Hall on Saturday night, and was in every wa ,T a most successful function. Mr R. F. Houlihan presided, and was supported by Messrs H. J. Day, O. F. Lewis, W. E. Goffe, G. H. Bullard, and D. Robertson. After dinner had been partaken of Mr Houlihan referred to the gathering as an auspicious one, and one that would do much to cement the friendship existing between the different branches of the Civil Service in Gisborne. He regretted the unavoidable absence of the President of the Association, Judge Jones, and read telegrams of apology from the Hon. Jas. Carroll, and Messrs J. W. Smith (Port Awanui) and C. E. Armstrong, C.E., each of whom express, ed his regret at not being able to participate in the function. The following toast list was then gone through, each being accorded musical honors:—“The King,” proposed by dm Chairman ; “The Civil Service, ’ proposed bv Mr. O. F. Lewis, responded to by Messrs H. J. Day and G. H. Bullard ; “Tihe Civil Service Sports Association,” proposed by Mr. Hanlon (1 alNorth), and responded to by Mr. H. Mackintosh: “Kindred Sports,” proposed by Mr. W. E Goffe. and responded to by Messrs Payne (rowing), Lewis (bowling), Rutherford (running), Gorman (cricket), and Williams (football) ; -“Donors of Trophies,” proposed by Mr. Ogilvie, and responded to by Mr Lewis on behalf of the donors; “The Visitors,” proposed by Mr. L if . Williams, responded to bv Messrs' McClvmont, Morris and Hanlon; Inc Ladies.” proposed bv Mr. A. J. Fyso-n. responded to by Messrs Wliiuray, Scott, and Maher; “The Press,” proposed by Mr D. Robertson, responded to by the “Times” representative. The different sneakers congratulated the Association upon the success winch had attended its efforts during the first year of its existence. Reference was made to the success of that evening’s gathering, and the hope was freely expressed that the function- would become an annual one-. An attractive programme of songs and recitations was given, items being contributed by the following gentlemen : Messrs Morris, C. F. Lewis, Mcdymont. Goffe, Fyson, Dads, Stagpaole, Hogg. Hanlon, and Whinray. Mr, J. Dods acted as accompanist. The catering was in the hands of Mr. S. Wootton, which is a sufficient guarantee M its excellence. Not alone were the viands of a. most delicious and tempting nature, but the tables had been most artistically arranged and decorated with a profusion of pot plants, native grasses, and cut flowers. Idle whole arrangements reflected great credit on the caterer, and upon the committee of the Association. Everything went with a swing, and the utmost ~ood fellowship prevailed through, out ■'■be gathering, which dispersed short!- before midnight.
