One of the most dangerous of explosives is iodide of nitrogen, a black powder which when; dry the slightest touch will ofite'n cause to explode with great violence. In experiments to determine the cause of its extreme explosiveness, some damp iodide of nitrogen' was rubbed on the strings of a bass viol It is known that the strings of such ui instrument will vibrate when those of a. similar instrument, having an equal tension, are played upon. In this case, after the explosive had .become thoroughly dry upon the strings, another ibass viol was brought near the strings and sounded. At a certain note the iodide of nitrogen on the prepared 1 instrument exploded. It was found) that the explosion occurred only when a rate of vibration of 60' a second was communicated to the prepared strings. Vibration l of the G string caused' an explosion, while that of the E string bad no effect. A man needs to ho very cautious and shrewd when lio takes the ripe fruit of bis brain to market. The prim i necessity of success, given a good idea ' is to make your patent a sure tliinf. Messrs Baldwin and 1 Ray ward, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin have correspondents and sub agents everywhere, and their repu. fcati m for scrupulous dealing gives their olio its full security.*
