LABOR REPORT.
MONTH OF FEBRUARY
The folloAving- report appears in the Labor Journal for last month:—
Gisborne.—Trade in general is keeping good. IVhat little dullness Avas experienced after the holiday season has noAV passed off, and tradesmen of all kinds are fully employed. The recent spoil of fine Aveather has improved the outlook for the freezing industry, and both local Ai'orks are full-handed. Building trades: Bricklaying.—No hands out of work ; the prospect for the future is good. Carpentry and joinery still busy, and plenty of work in hand. Painting is stil] busy, and every prospect of continuance during the balance of the season. Plastering—All hands employed; a slight improvement is shown. this month. Plumbing and gasfitting busy; every prospect of plenty of AA’ork for some time to come. "Woodworking trades: Woodworking and upholster_ ing fairly brisk, but not quite so bright as kindred trades. Sash and door factories busy, and plenty of Avork in hand. SaAvmilling —The improvement reported last month continues; there is every prospect of good business as the ra-ihray is opened up. Wood-turning, etc., slightly improved, but. net busy. Engineering trades: Agricultural-imple-ment making—All hands employed, but orders in this line are not plentiful. Electrical engineering dull; this trade is not likely to improve, until the municipal lighting schemes are started, hit. ting and turning—all hands kept going, but business is not bris'k. Leather trades: Bootmaking shops)—The trade is normal; no hands out ot employment. Saddlery and harnejsmaking—All hands kept going; the tendency to improvement reported last month still continues. Clothing trades: Dressmaking and millinery—Factories are. going full-lianded. out very little OA’crtime is being worked. Tailoring (order) —Fairly steady trade is being done; business has a tendency to be .-lack for the time jT the year, but all hands are kept going. Retail trades: Clothing—Good business is reported, but trade is not considered brisk, although some firms report a satisfactory month’s sale. Groceries —A slight iniprovement is reported on last month, imt business is not as good as usual for tbe time of the A-car. Printing trades: Bookbinding keeps busy; no hands out of employment. Printing trades fairly busy, no bands out of Avork. Maet-freex ing' etc. : Tanning, curring, and felimongoring busy; all hands fully employed. freezing, and preserving—The improvement in the weather has made the industry busy; all hands fully employed. Coachbuilding trades: Blacksmithing busy; one firm is enquiring for hands. Coach and carriage building-—Business is inclined to bo slack for the time of year, but very few hands are out of Avork. Cycle and motor trades—Business is fairly good, but is not considered busy. Agricultural operations: Farming, dairying, etc., are in a flourishing condition. The recent fine Aveather has improA-od matters for the agriculturalist. _ Feed is still abundant. For the dairy-farmer it has been an exceptionally good season. The shearing, Avhicli was delayed by tbe wet" Aveather, is iioaa* finished. Unskilled labor: Seventy-three applications for employment lurec been received doing the niontli, showing an increase on the previous month. Most of the men are from other districts, and came in the hope of getting employment on the. Government co-operative Avorks at Otoko. A considerable number have been sent there, also to the new freezing works at Tokomaru. Most of the local men arc employed, but it is inrjyossiblo to provide for any large influx of labor from other places.
