Mr. Hugli Reid, of Glasgow, tb e controlling spirit of one of our foremost locomotive-mam i f acturi ng ostabl fchmeiits, recently announced before a Scottish engineering audience that Ilia firm had evolved a new locomotive from which far-reaching results were expect, od. It was described as the first stcam-turbinc-electric locomotive. Stciam is raised in an ordinary locomotive typo of boiler, and is led therefrom to an im-pulse-turbine making 3000 revolutions per minute, directly coupled to a cori-tinuous-current variable-voltage dynamo. or generator. This dynamo in turn, furnishes electric current which drives a series of electric motors mounted on the driving axles of the engine. The stcain, after performing its allotted task, is condensed and returned again to the boiler. Such an engine, as may he realised, possesses many new and novo! features, and it may ho mentioned that the evolution of this design liae occupied several years of ceaseless experiment and investigation of many abstruse problems. In this latest, invention it is claimed that all previous disadvantages have been entirely overcome, and the preliminary trials with the first engine built on these new lines will be waited with the greatest interest, for its practical success will solve one of the most perplexing problems in traction that confronts engineers nnci railway shareholders to-day. Getting a patent is not so easy and safe a.thing, or not invariably, as many people think. The man with an idea should consult an expert. Messrs Baldwin and Ray ward, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, publishers of “Progress”—the inventors 5 journal—are constantly saving people expense and trouble.''’
