CLAIMS FOR COMPENSATION

[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON', March 23

Two of the claims for compensation brought in the 'Supreme Court by relatives of members of the crew of the steam trawler Duco, which foundered between Wellington and the Chatham Islands, have been settled out of Court. The owners of the vessel, the Wellington Harbor Ferry Co. Ltd., having agreed to pay a certain sum. To-day a special jury had been summoned for the hearing of the claims brought by Ellen Lang Tucker Waddilovc and Wm. Wardrop Waddilove, executrix and executor respectively of Wm. Waddilove, who was chief officer of the Duco when she was lost. The amount of the claim was £ISOO. It is not stated how much the Ferry Company agreed to pay. The Company had admitted liability under the Workers’ Compensation Act, and the maximum amount payable under this Act is £SOO. . Another claim which' was to have been investigated by a special jury and which has also been settled in a similar way, is that of Elizabeth Jane Menard, widow of Alex. Laird Menard, chief engineer of the Duco. _Thc claim in this case was also for £looo. ' There is at least one_ other claim against the Company still to be dealt with. i
