CAPTAIN SCOTT’S GRATITUDE TO NEW ZEALAND.

Captain Scott expresses his gratitude for New Zealand’s donation of £IOOO. He states that he proposes to obtain a considerable portion of his stores in New Zealand.
NEW ZEALAND RHODES SCHOLAR TO ACCOMPANY CAPTAIN SCOTT.

Mr. James Allan Thompson, a resident of Kalgoorlie, has come to an arrangement with Captain Scott to accompany the Antarctic expedition as geologist.. Mr Thompson was the first Rhodes scholar who went to Oxford from New Zealand. He proceeds to Sydney to v ‘confer with Professor David, and afterwards goes to New Zealand and joins the Terra Nova. [Mr. James Allan Thomson, F.G.S., was born in- Dunedin. He is the. son of Mr. G. M. Thomson, Dunedin. He School, Boys’ High School (Dunedin), and Otago University. In 1899 he was a prizeman in science, and in the same year occupied the position of captain of the first football fifteen for his school. He obtained the degree of B.Sc. in 1903, and was appointed a Lee Smith scholar to the Otago School of Mines i n 1900-2. In x~«j-± he was chosen as the first Rhodes scholar for New Zealand, and in 1907 was appointed to the-'first college lectureship in geology at Oxford, and elected a Fellow of the Geological Society.]
