COUNCILLORS’ PICKINGS. In the majority of cases the amount did not exceed £2O. A NAVAL DISPUTE. H.M.S. Irresistible has been isolated in Portland Harbor for a week, owing to all the gunsights having been tin-own overboard. The cause of the dispute has 'not been made public.

The Grand Jury at Chicago indicted the National Packing Company and subsidiary concerns for violating the anti-trust law of the United States.
The District Attorney has applied for a dissolution of the Beef Trust, naming the National Packing Company, Armour, Swift, and Morris Companies, besides individual directors. RAILROAD DISPUTE SETTLED. In connection with the American Western railroad workers’ dispute, a compromise has been arrived at- on matters of seniority and employment, while the application for an increase of -wages will be submitted to arbitration. NO PENSION FOR ROOSEVELT. A committee of the Senate on pensions declined to proceed with a Bill for retiring cx-President Roosevelt as chief of the army and navy with a pension of £2OOO. THE ALL-RED ROUTE. (Received March 23, 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 23. Replying to Mr. A. Fell, M.P. for Yarmouth, Colonel Seeley stated that the All-Red route was under consideration, but fie was unable to say when a decision would he reached.

At the Het Volk Congress at Pretoria, General Botha advised reorganisation on the broadest possible basis, .so that every South African, of whatever nationality, might become a member. His speech did not mention coalition. The Hotvolk adopted a resolution in accordance with his recommendations.
