ROWING.

POVERTY BAY CLUB. The final Youths’ Challenge Fours, which was rowed: off last evening,.resulted in a win for the representatives (B. McLeod. W. Hall, H. Williams, and T. Parker). The challenge crew (G. Sceats, P. Stubbs, L. J. Martin) although putting up a good fight to the finish, were slightly handicapped owing to the exceptionally rough state of the river, for while the heavier rep crew were hampered by the condi-

tions of the weather, they were not so affected as were the lighter crew. The race wag won by a length. All the challenge races now being over, Martin will take his place in the ren. crew.

ARNST v. WHELCiH. [Per Presß Association. | CHRISTCHURCH, March 23. The broken weather has hampered Arnst and -Whelch in training operations, but Whelch was over the full course on Saturday and Arnst on Sunday. The' Akaroa man is said to be in splendid condition, though too fine to please some experts, but local people speak enthustically of his prospects. Arnst, on the other hand, seems to be going lazily on the water, although once or twice he has electified shorewatchers. As a rule lie has' contented himself with long, steady work, pulling a regular 21 or 22 strokes to the minute, occasionally 25. When Whelch went over the course he paddled a couple of miles, then quickened to 26, and finished at 30 over the last ilialfrnile. The final deposit is to he paid on Monday. The course will be definitely settled on Thursday of next week. THE UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE. United Press Association —Copyright LONDON, March 22. The betting is 3 to I on Oxford for the boat race. *
