A Royal'Commission has been appointed, consisting of Professor vScott, of Christchurch, and; Mr. A. L. Beattie (chief mechanical engineer of New Zealand railways), to inquire into the braking eoumment of the Auckland tramways. This matter has been receiving the attention of the Public Works Department for more than a year, a. previous inquiry having indicated, the necessity of providing a. more efficient system than that of hand brakes*. The Auckland Electric Tramway Company lias been experimenting with air-brakes, and it is to advise the Government as to the safest and most suitable system for use in Auckland that the commission has been appointed.
