MISCHIEVOUS BOYS.
THE JUVENILE COURT. A sitting of the Juvenile- Court was held yesterday morning, before Mr. W. A. Barton, S.M., when two small boys aged 13 years and 10 years respectively, wore charged with- mischief to a boat and oars, the property of A. J. Fester, on the 7th March. Mr. T. Alston Coleman appeared for the- elder boy. Detective Rawle- stated that the boys took the boat up- the river and there lost- the oars, and then ran the- boat into the bank. The value of the oars and boat l was £2 10s. The boat, he understood, was in a. position to be recovered. but the oars were lost. Sergt. Hutton read the report- of two school teachers on the elder boy, who is just a year out from Scotland, and these showed him- to be of a- mischievous nature. The younger boy also did not boar a bright record at school. The boys were also’ charged with- the theft, on March- 10, of a spanner and several articles from a boat “The Merry Widow.” The Sergeant explained that they took the articles-, which were valued at 4s, and sold them to- a secondhand dealer for Is 6dy each receiving 9d. His Worship admitted that it was difficult to deal with these cases, and not wishing to send the boys to prison, or an industrial school, he decided- to give them another chance. He remanded them for 'three months, and ordered Sergt Hutton to keep an eye, on them and to instruct the headmaster at their schools to report on any acts of misconduct to him.
