KAITI SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY AJEETTNG. The filial meeting for the financial year of the Kaiti School Committee was held on Thursday evening in the school building, the following members being present:—Messrs A. J. Fyson (chairman), R. Rowan, T. R. Jones, K. Humphreys, J. C. E. Turner, and H. E, Hill (secretary). The Headmaster (Mr. J, H. Bull) was also in attendance. Correspondence was received from the lHawke’s Bay Education Board enclosing subsidy on money expended in improving the school grounds. The Headmaster reported as follows:—“The average attendance is 188.8, or 94 per cent, of the roll. The recent wet weather lias necessarily had an unfavorable effect on the percentage, which is 3 per cent, less than that •of last month. The roll reached the 800 mark in the beginning of the 'month, but now stands at 199. The Ifirst .concert by the children of this school took place on Friday last, in the Theatre. The experiment of taking so large a place was a somewhat risky one, but the generous support of the public of Gisborne, and good luck in the weather conditions, brought about a decided financial success, while opinions as to the merit of the entertainment have been pleasingly favorable. I have to acknowledge by indebtedness to numerous helpers for valuable assistance, willingly given. Mr Loten, the Board’s instructor in agriculture, visited the school on the loth jnst.. when I informed him of your committee’s wish that the gardens shou’! he placed at the rear of the scho. l, and* showed him where I had already begun to prepare the garden plots. The arrangements made quite met with his approval. The basins in the lavatory have mostly rusted through at the bottoms, and will require renewing." There is at present no clo'ck in the school, and I would ask yokir committee to be good enough to procure four small cheap ones, one for each room. Two would do for the present for two rooms where the teachers are without timepieces. Some of the doors require seeing to. I would also ask that the matter of providing a headmaster’s private room be placed before the Board.”
The report was adopted, the secretary being instructed to write to the Education Board asking them to convert a portion of the school verandah into a room suitable for the headmaster, and also asking them to renew the enamel wash-basins which were rusted and broken, and totally unfit for usei Proposed by Mr. Turner, and seconded by Mr Hill, that Mr Fyson and the headmaster be instructed to purchase four suitable clocks, one for each class-room.—Carried. The. Chairman congratulated the committee on the result of the school concert held on Friday, March 19th. which was a success both financially and as an entertainment. He stated that the receipts were £4o 3s 9d, and a clear profit of £32 3s 9d was the result. In concluding, he moved the following, which was seconded by Mr Turner—“ That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to Mr J. H. Bull (headmaster). the teachers, and the pupils who took part in the concert; also to the parents and the public for the generous support given.” The secretary was instructed to forward Mr Bull a copy of the above resolution. It was also decided that a letter be forwarded to Miss Dawson, thanking her for the trouble and care she bad taken in making the majority of the costumes worn in connection with the school concert, and upon which so much of the success achieved depended. Votes of thanks were also passed to Mr Hoff for assistance at rehearsals and on the night of the concert; to Mr W. Miller for a donation of £1 7s, and to an anonymous lady for a donation of £l. It was decided that’ the taps over the basins in the lavatory be repaired, and where necessary replaced. Mr. Humphreys was instructed to arrange the matter. A discussion took place in regar.d to the asphalting that had recently been done at the back of the school, the Chairman pointing out the vast improvement such work would have on the condition of the playground during the winter montlis, and it was finally decided 'that the footpath from the gate on the Wainui road to the front of the school be levelled and gravelled, thus completing the work. A number of other improvements were also spoken of, but were left as suggestions to the incoming committee. Mr Bull stated that the proceeds of the late concert could best be used by devoting the money left over after the purchase of medals and prizes to obtaining a set of gymnastic appliances. The committe unanimously agreed to this, and it was decided that Mr Bull obtain price'’, for two see-saws, two sets of parallel bars, ladders, and Roman rings. Accounts to the value of £2o 18s were passed for payment.
