ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
A TRAP ACCIDENT
An accident occurred at 2.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon on Tatapouri Hill which might easily have terminated in a fatality. Mr. W. J. Barlow, accompanied by a couple of friends, was returning to town m ins motor-car, and when almost at the top of the lull two gigs, with a lady and gentleman m eacn, were met coining from town. The car was backed to the side of the road to enable the vehicles to pass. The first gig got past safely, but the sicona •was not so fortunate. The horse swerved in too close to the bank, witn the result that the wheel ran up the face and the gig was capsized. The driver, in falling, lost posse-sion cf the reins, and was thrown clear, but the lady was pinned underneath the gig. Fortunately the reins fell underneath the lady, and this steadied the horse until the occupants of the car had time to secure the reins. The gig, which was a light one, was lifted, and the lady extricated from her dangerous position. She displayed much coolness and fortitude, expressed herself as none the worse for the mishap, and pluckily remounted the gig, and the pair proceeded on tlieir journey. It was extremely fortunate that the reins were pinned 'underneath, as the loop had got round the lady’s shoulders, and had the horse made off down the hill it is absolutely certain that she would have been dragged some distance under the overturned vehicle. ■ A DROWNING FATALITY. rPKU Purcss Association.)
