GOOD FRIDAY SERVICES.
HOLY'TRINnjA CHURCH. Special services wfrre conducted ill Holy Trinity Church yesterday. A celebration of the Holy Communion wag ~ held at 8 a.m.. the vicar Utev. L. Dawson Thomas) being the celebrant, assisted by the Rev. W. H. Roberts. A very large number of communicants at_ tended. At 11 a.m., when there was a good congregation, the vicar conducted! morning prayer, and the Rev. W. H. Roberts said the litany and the special prayer for the mission, and preached an eloquent sermon, taking as his text the \ words “Consider Christ.” He dealt v,_ with the Good Friday observance, and appealed for more earnestness in the carrying out of the teachings of'.Christ. At 3 p.m. a largely attended children g service, was conducted in the dhurch by the vicar. Several well-known hymns were sung by the children, and the vicar told the story of the first Good Friday. A lantern service was held in. the evening, when the church was crowded, many being turned away. About sixty excellent sacred views, dealing with the life of Christ, were shown, many beautiful colored views haying been specially brought over from Sydney. The Rev. F. W. Chatterton con- 'Lducted a short service before the views , were shown. The pictures were beautiful specimens of art, and the connecting story, told by the vicar, was full of interest. ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC CHURCH. High mass was celebrated at 9 a.m. on Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Altar of Repose was magnificently decorated by the Sisters of Mercy, assisted by the Children of Mary. Evening devotions were held at 7 p.m., the Rev. Father Lane preaching;' on “The Feast of the Blessed Eucharist.” Yesterday morning at 9 a.m. the church was altogether inadequate to_ accommodate the large congregation, many persons being unable to gain admission. The mass of the Pre-Sancti-fied was celebrated by the Rev. Father Lane. In tile evening, at 7 o’clock, there was again a large congregation. The Rev. Father Lane preached an eloquent sermon on “The Passion of Our Lord,” and Mrs. Phil Barry rendered th© solo “Mater Dolorosa.” To-morrow the special services will b© continued. Two masses will be celebrated, at 7.30 a.m. and 10 a.m. At the former the members of the H.A.C.B.S. will be present in full regalia. and at the 10 o’clock mass there is to be special music. St. Mary’s choir is to be specially augmented for the occasion, and wjll be under the conductorship of Mr. M. L. Foster. A number of other local musicians will render assistance, including Messrs. J. Adair and E. S. Kimpton. Rev. Father Lane will preach, taking as his subject- “The Feast of the Resurrection.” At 7 o’clock there will be the customary evening devotions.
