THAT RIVER.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Seeing that we have a Government Inspector in Gisborne making inquiry into the state of the Taruheru River, I would suggest he should call a meeting, say at the Borough or Cook County Council offices, of those persons willing to give evidence as to the cause or causes of river pollution, and of the truly aivful stench arising therefrom at low tide. Having resided close to this spot for twenty years, and haying closely observed tlie state of the river at different seasons of the yedr, I have come to the conclusion (and that five years ago) that while the freezing works, gut factory, cemetery, and the other causes mentioned in the Cook County Council’s\ sanitary inspector’s report may be (and undoubtedly are) contributory, the main cause still remains to bo mentioned, in the seaweed which lies rotting on the mud-banks of tlie Taruheru. The evidence I have on this point is, in my opinion, quite bevond dispute.—l am, etc., F. STAFFORD.
