The pear crop in the Hastings district this year lias been very satisfactory, and in one instance remarkable. Mr. Kirkham, of lw.angatere.tere, gathered from two trees 103 cases. Getting a patent is not so easy and safe a thing, or not invariably, as many people think. The man with an idea should consult an expert. Messrs Baldwin and Hayward, Auckland, 'Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, publishers of “Progress”—the inventors’ journal— are constantly saving people expense and trouble/. Labor prospects are exceptionally bright in Taranaki at the present time, all "classes of labor being fully employed, and there is every assurance that the work will continue right through the winter.
