KAISER AND THE DUCHESS.

Grand Duchess Anastasia of MeckJen. burg-Schwerin, the mother of the German Crown Princess, arrived in Berlin (says “M.A.P.”) to attend the series of Court festivities which terminate in the celebration of the Kaiser’s birthday on •January 27, but she did not take up her quarters in the Imperial Palace like the other royal guests who come to the German capital for the same purpose. Grand Duchess Anastasia, when in Berlin, takes rooms in an hotel, because there is a feud between her and the Kaiser. This feud dates from the time of the Crown Prince's wedding in the summer of 1905. Previous to that hap. py event, there existed at the Imperial Court a strong dislike to Grand Duchess Anastasia; but, nevertheless, it was found necessary to invite her to take the place of honor which was her due at her daughter's nuptials. Accordingly, she sat next to the Kaiser at all the banquets and State functions. The Kai_, ser, after leading her into the banquet-ing-hall or ballroom, ignored her for the rest of the evening. He sat next to tier, but looked the other way. He wag her neighbor «it table, but ostentatiously talked to his neighbor on the other side all the time. His studied neglect of Grand Duchess Anastasia was so marked that the whole Court noticed it. Grand Duchess Anastasia very wisely curbed her resentment during the festivities, but the moment the Crown Prince had left the palace to start on their honeymoon, she packed up her things, and, although it was nearly midnight. insisted on leaving the palace and taking up her quarters at the Hotel Bristol, some little distance along the- same street. Since that time she has never accepted the Kaiser’s hospitalitv , although she is regularly, as a matter of form, invited to the- Court festivities.
