FREEZING WORKS SPORTS.

GATHERING MARRED by RAIN.

The combined freezing works of the district held their annual sports gathering yesterday m Mr., R. Scott’s grounds at Kaitaratahi. The weather was very much against the success of the pTcnic, though a much larger crowd wore* present than last 'year. Steady rain set in at 1.30, and continued until three o’clock', when it again lifted for nearly an hour, but just before 4 o’clock set in harder than ever, and continued so. The arrangements for_the- convenience of the public were as complete as the state of the weather allowed, but two or three things require remedying at next year’s gatnering. The starting was far from being satisfactory, a large number of false starts and re-run races being the .result. The method of giving toys to the children also requires attention. At a picnic where such a large number oT tnose present comprise the younger generation, care needs to be taken as to the methods in which they are catered for, and yesterday such w a s not the case, a great many of the children obtaining two and even three toys apiece whilst others, and ther e were a . number of them, obtained‘none at- all. The rain spoilt the hope of having any. children’s races and the toys had perforce to be given away, and the above was the result. The tug-of-war was postponed to a future date owing to the, state of the weather causing the grass to be very slippery and for such' an event. Throw’ing the Cricket ball was also abandoned. The most popular event of the day was undoubtedly the jumping event for horses, six starters coming to the post, the winner eventually turning up in Mr Newman’s Biddy. Mr. A. Pritchard acted as judge in this event. The secretary, Mr. M. Osborne, worked very hard, and to his management resulted a large amount of the success attained.
