TE KARAKA SPORTS,

A BIG ATTENDANCE

There were about 500 people present at the Te Karaka sports, held on (the racecourse at Te Karaka yesterday. Despite the rain, which was incessant throughout the afternoon, an enjoyable day was spent, and good sport witnessed. The joint secretaries, Messrs P. J. Sefton and T. J. Orimmin, assisted by a strong committee, got everything off to time, and never let the meeting lag in interest. A particularly good item on the programme was the leaping competition, and the big field gave the judges, Messrs G. R. Wyllie and H. Telford, a hard task to select the winner, hut their choice was a wise one. The presence of Vita Bros.’ orchestra added greatly to the enjoyment of the afternoon. The following were the results: 100yds Boys’ Race (under 16 years). —lst heat: B. Batchelor 1, C. Morrell 2 ; 2nd heat: J. Graham 1, 0. Howie 2. Final: J. Graham 1. B. Batchelor 2, O. Howie 3. Nine starters. Time, 12 2-osec.

A protest was put in by Pollock that Titoki had run in 'Opotiki, and had not forwarded a list of his performances to the handicapper. After hearing evidence the protest was dismissed, as it was only hearsay evidence, hut the protest money was returned, the committee thinking there were grounds for suspicion. 150yds Maiden. —F. Arthur 1, A. Rowe 2, W. Wright 3. A good race, won by a couple of yards. Time, 161 sec. Eight starters. School Girls’ Race, 100yds.—A. Dumphe.y 1, C. Ruru 2, V. Drummond 3. Eight starters. Time, 14see. Schoolboys’ Potato Race.—E. Brown 1. J. Patty 2, F. Creamer 3. Fourteen starters. 880yds Handicap.—H. C. Davy (20 yds) 1, M. W. Hogan (35yds) 2, P. A. O’Meara (50yds) 3. Won easily. Eleven starters. Time, 2min 8 3-ssec. A protest was put in on the ground that the winner had not been handicapped, hut as this was on account of an error in the publication of the handicaps, the protest was dismissed. In this case the protest money was also returned. Single Ladies’ Race, 100yds.—Miss Ruru 1, Miss Morris 2, Miss Hindrup 3. A close finish. Eight started. Potato Race, on horseback.—F. Malone 1, M.
