The steamer Kilburn, which has arrived from Grey’s Harbor, was the cen_ tral figure in an incident in the Red ■Sea on her previous voyage from the United Kingdom to Japan. She struck a reef in the Red Sea near the Farsan Islands. Sixty boats, with about 800 Bedouin pirates, surrounded her and opened fire, which the crew returned. When the steamer’s ammunition was exhausted the crew escaped in an Arab dhow which stood by, and eventually ’brought assistance. Meanwhile the pirates stripped the vessel and got safely away. The Kilburn eventually was towed to Periim and repaired.
[Tlie Farsan Islands are in the southern part of the Red Sea, off the coast of Ye-men, Arabia.]
