Fiddis, Steptoe, McFarlane, and Harvey. The visiting members wore entertained at a banquet last night. THE HOLIDAYS. NEW PLYMOUTH, March 29. The weather was splendid for the holidays, wiiicli were taken full advantage of by holiday seekers. The functions were: Caledonian sports, golf tournament, Patea races, and jubilee celebrations of the battle of Waireka. PALMERSTON N., March 29. The weather was fine for the holiday, with a cold southerly wind. The chief events yesterday were the Manawatu Caledonian Society’s seventh annual meeting, the Maori lawn tennis tournament, and bowling. The Caledonian Society’s sports were the most successful yet held here, the success extending to a concert in the evening. At the sports the gold medal for the points prize for pipe music was won ,by P. Finlayson, Palmerston North, and for Highland dancing by J. McKechnie, Dunedin. The cup for most points in the athletic events was won by D. McDowell ; the most points in the Caledonian handicap by E. S. Bates; most points for cycling events, M. Jansen ; most points for juvenile dancing, Flora Shaw, Wellington; best dressed Highlander, J. Lockhead, Feilding. In the amateur events, D. Walden won the 100 yards’ race, and 1). M. Robertson the 220 yards’ race; D. D. Parkes and H. Walkely ran a dead heat in the BSO yards’ race. In the open event, Caledonian Handicap, L. G. Allan won the 100 yards; Y. O’Neill the 220 yards, Bates being second; Bates won the 440 yards; Allan won the 120 yards’ hurdles; Stokes the half-mile, and Hall the mile.

PALMERSTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. PALMERSTON N., March 29. St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Selection Committee has approached certain ministers, through the Moderator, as to whether they would consider a call if made prior to submission to the congregation. A MORMON CONFERENCE. One hundred northern Mormons, including several missionaries from Utah and Maori disciples, are in Palmerston to-night, en route to a conference at Grey town, where representatives of 5000 Mormons will gather. POLICE TRANSFERS. Sergt. Stagpoole left -for Oamaru today after receiving presentations from the justices. Sergt. Maguire, of Wellington, takes up his duties on first inst. THE ELUSIVE POWELKA. The air is full of rumors regarding Powelka’s supposed appearance, but on being tested they proved illusive. MORE UNIONS TO UNITE. WELLINGTON, March 29. The Divers’, Painters’,, and Shearers’ Unions are holding federation meetings in Wellington at present. The main purpose of the drivers is to establish a New Zealand Drivers’ Federation. Last year’s rales and regulations governing such a federation were practically settled. This year’s conference has confirmed the work of its predecessor, and the federation is now an established fact. The Painters’ Conference is to bring about uniformity and unanimity in the matter of subscriptions and rules. The object of the Shearers’ Federation is to secure complete unanimity in matters of legal interest; also to review the shearing season just over. AMATEUR DEBATERS USE TOO MANY NOTES. •• CHRISTCHURCH, March 29. The University debate in connection with tlie annual contests between col leges was held last night beforo a large audience. Canterbury College debated against Victoria, and Auckland against Otago. The subject was “That the training and educatipn provided by such a-university as ours is the best preparation for a commercial or industrial career.” The judges placed Auckland first and Otago second. Of the winners, Marshall scored in matter and Algie in manner. The debating generally was of a high order, hut the judges were of opinion that too free use was made of notes. ' '

BIBLE CLASS' YOUNG MEN CONFER IN TIMARU.

TIMARU, March 29. The annual conference and Easter camp of the Yeung Men’s Bible Class Union Institute of the Presbyterian Church 'was held on the Timaru show grounds; about 200 being present from 'all parts of the Dominion . The weather was fine till yesterday. The conference decided that the next be at Wellington, and that an extra £IOO a year be raised for a second agent for Bible class work the Women’s Bible Class Union and the General Assembly to find the "balance; also that the “Outlook” be

induced to add a Bible class supplement monthly in place of tho defunct Young Men’s Magazine. St. John’s (Lyttelton) team won the championship banner. The camp brokv up this morning.
