FIRE AT NAPIER. ("Per Press Association.] NAPIER, March 30. A five-roomed dwelling, owned by M. Lascelles, and occupied bv W. J. iSandford, was totally destroyed by fire early this morning, the flames being ’fanned by a heavy southerly gale. Everything was burned, and the inmates had a narrow escape. The insurance on the building was £2oo' in the Sun office, and on the furniture £IOO in the London and Lancashire office. PROROGATION OF PARLIAMENT. WELLINGTON, March 30. A “Gazette” was issued to-night proroguing Parliament from March 31 to April 30. THE NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE. The Dominion Conference of the New Zealand Alliance is to be held at Wellington on June 15th. THE CORKHILLhSMITiH TRAGEDY. Corkhill, charged with the murder of Christopher 'Smith, iu Pipitea street, several weeks ago, was to-day committed for trial. The defence was reserved. Evidence was given the same as at the inquest, showing that accused, who is an elderly man, went to the house in the execution of his duty. He had a scuffle with Smith, following on which it is alleged Corkhill drew a small revolve;- and shot Smith, who died almost immediately. HIBERIAN SOCIETIES IN CONFERENCE. About sixty delegates representing various branches of the Hiberian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society are' holding a conference in Wellington, Mr P. J. Nerheny presiding. In his address the chairman said the society numerically and financially was improving by leaps and bounds. At tlie end of December the amount of sick fund in the branches totalled £12,588, incidental fund £1699, benevolent fund £306, and funeral fund £7/95.
TIMBER WARD DESTROYED. A fire at Lower Hutt early this .morning destroyed a joinery, plumber’s, find painter’s shop, also the contents of a timber yard belonging to Strand Bros., saw-millers. The heavy gale in- , terfered greatly with the work of the brigade, which, however, managed to save the adjoining residences, but not before some £2so' worth of 'damage had been done to outbuildings and the house of P. H. Gosse. Strand’s workshop and machinery were insured in the South British office for £7OO, but the loss exceeds the- insurance by several hundreds. Gosse’s house was insured for £4oo' in the Royal office, and the furniture for £l5O- in the New Zealand office.
CONFERENCE OF FROZEN MEAT COMPANIES. CHRISTCHURCH, March 30. A meeting of representatives of the New Zealand "frozen meat companies was held this afternoon in the office of the Christchurch Meat Company to consider the various representations made by the Tecent conference and also the proposals submitted by Mr W. D. Lysnar. The meeting was not open to the Press. CONCILIATION AT DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, March 30. The Conciliation Commissioner this morning met delegates from- the local bodies and representatives of the General Laborers’ Union interested in the work controlled by local bodies. Applications for exemption by -the City Council and Harbor. Board was opposed by Mr. McManus, representing the Laborers’ Union, but was granted by Mr. Triggs, Commissioner.
