CANADA AND UNITED STATES.
NEW STEPS TOWARDS A TRADE
AGREEMENT
The Speech from the Throne, which was read by Earl Grey at the recent opening of Parliament at Ottawa, inchcates a determination on the part of the Canadian Government, despite the opposition of a large section of the community, to endeavour to make a trade reciprocity treaty wi th the United! States. The paragraph which refers to the recent Canadian-American conference here declares: While no conclusions have been reached and no formal proposals made, the discussion on the suhjecfc which has taken place encourages the Government in tne hope that at an early day, without any sacrifice of Canada’s interests, arrangements may be made to admit many products of the Dominion into the United States on satisfactory terms. The Speech further states that, while recognising the importance of the market of the United Kingdom ,the Government felt that they would' avail themselves of every opportunity to promote friendly commercial relations with the rest of the Empire and with _ foreign countries, so that surplus Canadian products may he admitted by them on the most favorable terms.
