The Mayor (Mr Lysnar) has received an invitation for himself and Mrs Lysnar from the Salvation Army authorities in Auckland, to be present at tile opening of the new home for inebriates on Ruthe’s Island. The opening ceremony is to take place towards the end. of the present month, but. owing to prior engagement, the. Mayor "and Mayoress will be unable to accept the invitation
Adjutant Melksham of the Salvation Army leaves for Auckland by the s.s. Tarawera to-day. The object of his visit is to attend a couucil meeting to be conducted by Colonel Knight, officer in charge of the North Island, and to he present at the opening of the Army's new home for inebriates at Rut he's Isdand.
Mr -J. Dakley Brown, the veteran Wellington journalist, is at present on a visit to Gisborne.
Mr. G. M. Stubbs, who has been for the past six years on the clerical staff of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, has resigned in order to take up a position with the Tokomaru Freezing C-o. Mr. J. W. Souter, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Souter, and Miss Kate Souter, of Cambridge, drove from their home to Wellington in a 20 horse-power motorcar last week. The route was via Wairoki, Taupo and Napier, and the roads were found to be in splendid order, during the greater portion of the run. though dust storms hindered progress in Hawke’s Bay. They are now on the return journey, which is being made via Levin, Foxtoii, Wanganui, New Plymouth, and the Mokau district. Among the medical students who have just passed the third (M. 8., 8.5.) examination for medical degrees of the University of London is Mr. R. Stout, of Guy’si Hospital and New Zealand. Mr. Stout is a son of Sir Robert Stout. Mr. Chas. Douglas, secretary to the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Societv intends leaving on a trip to the Old Country by the Corintlfic, leaving Wellington towards the end of March.
Four young Roman Catholic priests, the Revs Cronin. Harnett, Dore, and Kincaid arrived from Sydney on Thursday by the Warrimoo. The new arrivals .have come, out from Home to join the church in-New Zealand, and will be attached to the Wellington arch-diocese. The Hon. A. R. Guinness, Speaker of the House of Representatives, is spending a few days at the Hot Springs.
