GISBORNE’S EXPORTS.

VALUABLE Wi.ui, CLIP

An interesting return giving the value of the exports from Gisborne during last year has been prepared hv tlie local Customs officials, and an excellent idea of the productivity ‘of me district is afforded by a study of the figures. In 1910 the exports exceeded those of the previous year by £148,651, the re-s|>ecti\-e totals bom- £1,189,272 and £1.040,621. This miely attributable to the increase in avool. Tlie A - alue of avool exported from Gisborne is given as £769,741, and the increase is no doubtdue to the hotter prices Avliich prevailed last year. Greasy avool shoA\*ed the most improvement, for tlie A’siluc given in the return Avas £2(4,436 in adAomce of the amount included in the figures for 1909. r l"lie export of scoured avool hi 1910 was not as large as in the jireA'imrs year, but the value increased by £1946. Slipe aa'oo] Avas not shipped to nearly the same extent as in 1909, and the decrease in the value of the quantity exported was £10,957, AAdion compared Avitli the proA'ious yoqr. dutton and lamb were pot as largelv exported as in 1909, and the A-alue showed a marked decrease. In that year 372,073 carcases of mutton Avere sent Homo, and their A-alue Avas set doAvn at £218,383, while last year the consignments totalled 303,838 carcases, A'alued at £161,576. Lamb also showed a falling-off, for there Avas a decrease of 79,014 carcases, and consequently the value of this product in the returns was loAA'ered by £47,775. Despite thefact that there Avas more beef " exported last year, the value shoAvocl a decline of £7639, which no doubt was due to the slackness of the market at Home.

Butter apparently Avas not as plentiful as in the previous year, for only 2879cAVt Avas exported, against 3744 cwt in 1909.

Hides and sheepskins AA'ore slightly better than in the previous year, and talloAV improA-ed to the extent of £6288. Pelts dropped £7924, and other exports, Avliich include smaller commodities than those mentioned, also decreased slightly. The details of the principal exports are:—
