The test match was continued to-day in hot weather. The wicket was perfect, and the attendance numbered 5000. Kcllewav (39) and Ransford (31) faced Llewellyn and Sinclair. The howlers are full of vim and theficlding close, and runs were not easy to get. Kellewav was unenterprising, but Ransford was more aggressive. He reached 50 as the result of 80 minutes’ batting. Without further addition to the score, he turned to hit a “’ticer” from Llewellyn, missed, and was bowled. Bardslev replaced him. and began immediately. Sinclair bad bowled eight overs for 11 runs, but the ninth yielded lour, and 100 came up. With the score at 111, Kellewav was smartly caught at the wickets. He had batted 114 minutes, and 12G were up. Pegler and Schwarz were tried with the ball, and twenty minutes' tedious play followed before luncheon. Only sixty runs were made in 87 minutes, not a single fourer being scored. At the adjournment the score was 141, Bardsley 26, Trumper 11. Sinclair and Llewellyn bowled on the resumption of play. Trumper glanced each man to the boundary, then banged Llewellyn twice for four. Facing Sinclair, he' hit 15 off the over with four different strokes. Faulkner replaced Llewellyn, and a four to Trumpor made him 50 for 61 minutes’ batting, four more meant that he had notched 44 of his total in 25 minutes. Pegler relieved Sinclair, and a two to Bardsley completed 200 in 173 minutes. A snick to the boundary gave Bardsley 50 in 87 minutes. With the score at 226, Nourse, who had relieved Faulkner. got Bardsley leg before. The retiring batsman, who was suffering from a slightly strained wrist, showed merely defence." In 102 minutes he hit only one four. Gehrs took his place, and played a lively innings for 20. He made some fine strokes, then tamely put a ball to mid-on. Five for 276. Hill started with a stolen run. Trumper, driving Faulkner for four, completed his century in 126 minutes. In the same over Hill was caught at long-on off a no-ball. At the tea adjournment the total was 295, Trumper 109, Hill 7. Llewellyn and Schwarz bowled after tea, and Trumper was soon off again, but Hill was soon out, caught- on the boundary behind the bowler. Six for 319. Armstrong went in, and his first scoring stroke was a drive to the boundary off Llewellyn. Runs came freely, so Pegler and Sinclair were resorted to. A total of 350 was hoisted in 246 minutes. Trumper. with two hits for seven, off Pegler, was 150 for I<6 minutes. The next man to go was Armstrong, who tried to place Sinclair to the on. bu the ball kept low and bowled him. Seven for 354. Carter replaced him and began watchfully, but Trumper continued vigorously, and three fours in Pegler’s over brought 400 up in 312 minutes. Carter soon got into doubles, and then hit two fours in one over. Sinclair, _ Nourse. and Schwarz were tried with the ball. At 424 the latter’s first over got Carter leg before. Eight for 430. Cotter went in, and stayed for Trumper, who quickly ran liis score to 200. which took him 227 minutes. He was in altogether 230 minutes, hit 25 fours, did not give a chance, and scarcely made a false stroke. He played a magnificentinnings, in which he only once lifted the ball, and that was nearly a sixer. He received an ovation. The fielding of the South Africans was fair. The weather changed to cool late in the afternoon, but rain is unlikely. Hill says that Trumper’s innings was the finest "knock’’ he has ever seen.
