BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY.

A VISIT OF INSPECTION.

The Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar), aoconipanied by Mr. F. W. Marchant, paid a. visit of inspection to the waterworks in the Arai Valley yesterday, leaving town early in the morning, and returning fairly late in .the afternoon.

The break-pressure tank was reached about 11 a.m., and it was seen that the town pipe was not taking all the water which was coining into the tank, as it was overflowing. When returning about 5 p.m., the- overflow had ceased, and the pipe was taking all the water. It was found that there was a good flow of water running over the dam at the head of the lino, the quantity of which was roughly estimated by Mr. Marchant at between 6000 and <OOO gallons per hour.

At the place where the present supply is bein<>- taken from, lower down, the pipe was running all but full, the water being side-tracked from the main creek to the pipe. Asked as to the stability of the supnlv. Mr Lysnar told a ‘‘Times” reporter last night that, in order to. make the position quite safe, both at the pumping stations and at the present intake, sonic improvements would he required. These would he necessary to make the supply thoroughly dependable, ancl as clean as possible. M r . Marchant will, in all probability, make some recommendations, in this direction, which will come before the Council to-night. One of the main objects of the visit wu to ascertain if the variable pressure being obtained in town is to he accounted for by the supply, but it was found that this was not so, being due entirely to the heavy draw-off in town during the day. This point Mr. Marchant wanted to he absolutely sure of before finally deciding in regard to the reservoir .

“It is quite plain that it is only a matter of time,” said the Mayor, ‘‘when these pipes will be <-<uite insufficient to bring in all the water that is required. As our population grows, the use of the water for gardens, etc., will have to he considerably curtailed, as is done in other places.”
