The returned contingent, while somewhat depressed over the failure of the full rinks from Gisborne to make a better showing, are correspondingly elated in regard to Gisborne furnishing the winners in the champion pairs. The greens in Auckland were much faster than the local greens,. and this fact militated considerable for a time against the local men. Play was commenced at 9 a.in. daily and often, in order to get through, it was found necessary to conclude some of the games by the use of candles. THE “PAIRS” FINAL DESCRIBED. The final for the champion pairs, in which Alartin and Sawyer, of the Turanganui Club, were successful, is described as having furnished an exciting contest, although it is said that the play was only moderate, and not what might hen extracted in a championship final. Alartin commenced by putting singles in each of the first five heads. On the 6th head their opponents, of whom Alunro (Thorndon) was skip, scored one, and with a 5 on the 7th head made matters even. On the Bth head Alunro scored two. a performance which was followed by Alartin on the 9th head, and exchanges of singles followed up to the 17th head, when the scores were again level—l 4 all. On the 18th head Alartin scored 2, making his score 16—14, hut on the 19th head Alunro scored one, and on the 20th head he got in two. The final head was ill us entered upon with Alunro leading by one. Sawyer drew two beautiful shots, and laid with them both. Alunro with. Ills last hall failed to alter the position, and Alartin drew another shot, scoring a popular win by a margin of two points, the final scores being, Alartin 19—Alunro 17. GRATIFICATION IN GISBORNE. The news of the success of A. Sawyer and J. J. Alartin in the champion pairs match at the Auckland tournament was, a.j a matter of course, the subject cf much congratulation among Gisborne howlers on Saturday, and the feelimr of gratification seemed to he quite as strong among members of the Gisborne Club as with those of the Turanganui Club, of whom the champion pair” were the representatives. On the news becomincr known on the Gisborne green, the result of the match was promptly "chalked up” on a scoring hoard, the announcement being concluded with a “Hurrah” in large letters, and the heard was placed in a prominent position in front of the panlion for the information of all beholders. Telegrams giving the result and some few particulars of the final match were also posted up outside the pavilion, me general feeling was that Sawyer and Alartin, by their victory, had done not a little to console Gisborne howlers for the bad fortune which attended the rinks sent to the tournament from here.
