CONTROL OF WESTERN PACIFIC.

RESOLUTION OF AUCKLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

LPer press association.] AUCKLAND, Jan 14. The movement for the removal of the office of High Commissioner of the AA rcstera.. Pacific from-Suva to Sydney, which has been set on foot in Australia, was the subject of a discussion at yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the Council- of the Chamber of" Commerce. The president (Mr J. H. Gunson) said that the proposal was fraught with considerable danger to the -interests of New .Zealand, as it might mean the beginning: of a movement which would ultimately lead to the alienation of the present trade with the Islands from New. Zealand and their absorption by Australia.. The Australian tariff at the present time operated against New Zealand, and if the proposal was carried into effect there, was the danger that the islands would either become part of Australia or be formed into a separate state of the Commonwealth, to the probable exclusion of the present New Zealand trade. He moved ‘-'that this chamber views with concern the movement now set on foot in the Commonwealth of Australia for the removal of the High Commissioner of the Western Pacific from Suva to Sydney, and considers that such removal may he prejudicial to the interests of New Zealand as regards the Fiji group and all other islands of British possession, or under British protection to the north, east, and south of the said Fiji group, and that the Now Zealand Government ho respectfully asked to use- all constitutional means at their command to prevent the passing of the control of the above islands into any other State or Power.” Mr Graves Aickin, in -seconding the motion, urged that immediate action should bo taken. He was surprised that

more notice had not been taken of the matter in New Zealand, /.is the project was undoubtedly likely to be prejudicial to our interests.

Mr Upton : I think the motion is too pugnacious altogether. The motion was carried, Mr Upton alone dissenting.
